Monday Moanin Thoughts #79 Improve You Leadership

Being a leader in public education in 2013 is filled with challenges. There are mandates, shrinking resources, learning gaps, new supervisors, and  state legislatures passing laws that create a new era of accountability that is difficult to understand. These challenges can cause you to lose confidence which could negatively impact your role as a leader. Below are some strategies that may be helpful in enhancing your skills as a leader. In no particular order they are :

1. State and restate your vision often.
2. Reach out to staff members that will give you honest feedback, not things you want to hear.
3. Focus on teaching and learning for the 21st century. Talk about good instruction daily.
4. Are you feeling disrespected by others? Don’t be a victim, be proactive  in making your building a great place for student learning.
5. Make your organization flourish by using the Losada ratio of three positive/ encouraging comments  to one growth producing comment to staff members.
6. Be well planned and in control of your time.
7. Lead by doing. You learn the work by doing the work.
8. Be part of a Personal Learning Network(PLN) by participating in twitter chats. Stretch and challenge yourself to grow in this area.
9. Take time to build relationships with your community.
10. Find the joy in your job and stay positive. Find the good stuff everyday.
