Monday Moanin Thoughts #330 2019 Summit Opener, Are You A Guest Or A Host?

Happy late July, 2019 Monday Moanin to all of you. On August 1st, over 120 educators from the tri-county area of Detroit will attend the 9th Annual Hickey Leadership Group Planning Summit. It is during the Summit that participants begin to do some focused planning with their teams for the upcoming 2019-20 school year. Every year the Summit begins with an opener. I wanted to share part of the opener with you. Please consider using it as a prompt or reflection during future meetings as you begin  planning for the opening of a new year.

The opener for Summit 2019 will refer to one of  Dr. Tim Elmore’s images from his  Habitudes #2 resource. Image one is about the difference between the roles of  being a host or being a guest. Elmore shares that “leaders are intentional about relationships and see themselves as hosts not guests. They go out of their way to connect with people and provide for them.” So, let’s dig a little deeper into this image. What role do you play in your district, school, or classroom?

As you prepare for 2019-20, consider the following questions:

  • What characteristics make a good host?
  • What gets in the way of you being a host?
  • What characteristics make a good guest?
  • What are the circumstances  that may call you to be a guest?
  • Share a time when you were in  the role of being a guest. Host?

I hope all of you have a productive week and those attending the Summit have a successful day of planning. Be well and keep finding the good stuff.
