Monday Moanin Thoughts #199 Lead With Confidence, Not Insecurity

Welcome to first Monday Moanin of March 2016. Today I was reading a post from George Couros on twitter about leadership.. Couros is a great educational leader from Edmonton and has  a large PLN  with followers from around the world. His blog was a draft of some work he is doing on confidence.  Among many of his powerful thoughts was the following; “Confidence is crucial to leadership, but it can be a fine line between arrogance and insecurity.”

This profound quote lists  traits  that define three of the challenges that are a part of  leadership. The past few weeks I have met with many leaders that are dealing with the two traits of  insecurity and confidence.  March signals the time of year that causes leaders to question things  and lead with more caution. Students, staff , and the community are longing and anticipating  the beginning of spring break. During the long month of March it can be difficult to remain focused , engaged, and work with a positive purpose.  Staff members need direction and support. To survive this stretch consider focusing on the following two areas:

  • Focus on tier one and effective instruction. Pay attention and validate the outstanding work that your staff is doing in this area.
  • Lead with respect. Confidently model it and demand it.

By focusing on these two areas there is littles room for the traits of arrogance or insecurity in your leadership.

Have a great week and keep finding the good stuff.

Quote of the week:
